Inspired by the rock found near the Douro river, XISTO Typeface is an experimental font made of angular characters of which the shapes overlap each other.
Xisto (schist in Portuguese) is a type of rock found more predominantly in Trás-os-Montes and Beiras, Portugal. It dates back to the Paleozoic Age, about 500 million years ago.
The idea for XISTO Typeface emerged from the well-known houses made of schist in Aldeias do Xisto, of which the superposition morphology of the construction shapes a physical set of blocks. Despite the traditional origin, its physical mechanics is set to be brutalist and subtly futuristic at the same time.
XISTO Typeface Specimen was created with cuts of different styles (rounded, straight and angular) combined into rounded-straight, rounded-angular or straight-angular hybrids.
A carved and hollow font with simple, angular and protruding traits, and utterly opposite shapes. This is XISTO Typeface, a strong personality font, made for strong identities, covers, posters, wayfinding, and headlines.
